What is Hair Transplantation?
Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure to add new hair follicles to people suffering from hair loss or baldness. This procedure is generally performed for conditions such as common types of baldness in men (androgenetic alopecia) or hair thinning in women.
Hair transplantation is generally performed by two basic methods:
- FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation): In this method, the surgeon removes a strip of skin and hair follicles (roots) from the donor area (usually the back or side heads). This strip is then divided into small pieces of follicles and transplanted to the bald area.
- FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction): In FUE, each hair follicle is extracted from the donor area one by one. These follicles are then transplanted to the bald area. FUE is generally considered a less invasive method and leaves fewer scars.
The hair transplant procedure is usually done under local anesthesia and can take several hours. There may be a recovery period that takes a few days after the procedure, and the results usually become apparent within a few months.
Hair transplantation offers a permanent solution because the transplanted hair usually does not fall out. However, in some cases more than one session may be required and results may vary from person to person. Before any hair transplant procedure, it is recommended that the person make a detailed assessment about the cause of hair loss and their expectations.
How to do hair transplantation ?
Hair transplantation is usually performed in several stages:
- Consultation and Evaluation : First, a consultation is held with a hair transplant specialist. At this stage, the person’s type and degree of hair loss is evaluated, it is decided whether the person is suitable for hair transplantation, and their expectations are determined.
- Determining the Donor Area : The donor area from which hair follicles will be taken for hair transplantation is determined. Generally, the back or side parts of the head are used for this purpose, since these areas are generally not affected by hair loss.
- Application of Anesthesia : The hair transplantation procedure is performed under local anesthesia. This allows the procedure to be performed painlessly and comfortably.
- Application of FUE or FUT Method :
- If the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method is to be used, the surgeon cuts a strip on the skin and removes the hair follicles in this strip. These follicles are then divided into smaller pieces and prepared for transplantation.
- In the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method, each hair follicle is removed from the donor area one by one and prepared for transplantation.
- Channel Opening : Small channels are opened to add follicles to the area of baldness or sparse hair. These channels determine where the hair follicles will be placed.
- Follicle Transplantation : Prepared hair follicles are placed in the channels one by one. This procedure is done by paying attention to the natural hair growth pattern and achieving an aesthetic appearance.
- Healing Process : After the hair transplantation procedure is completed, a healing process begins that usually lasts a few days. There may be crusting and redness in the procedure area, but these symptoms usually disappear in a short time.
After the hair transplant procedure, it is important to follow the care instructions recommended by the doctor. During the first few weeks, care should be taken and the hair transplantation area should be protected. Results usually become apparent within a few months and are permanent.
What are the Hair Transplantation Techniques?
Hair transplantation types generally differ depending on the techniques used. Here are a few of the commonly used hair transplantation methods:
- FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) : In this method, the surgeon removes a strip of skin and hair follicles (roots) from the donor area. This strip is then divided into small pieces of follicles and transplanted to the bald area.
- FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) : In FUE, each hair follicle is extracted from the donor area one by one. These follicles are then transplanted to the bald area. FUE is generally considered a less invasive method and leaves fewer scars.
- DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) : DHI is a type of FUE method in which a special pen is used. With this pen, hair follicles are taken and placed directly on the transplanted area. There is no need for channel opening and the transplantation of follicles occurs faster.
- Percutaneous (Sapphire) FUE : In this technique, when using the FUE method, a special device with a sapphire tip is used to remove hair follicles. Sapphire tip provides a sharper and more precise cut, making follicle removal easier and more effective.
- Robotic Hair Transplantation : Robotic hair transplantation is a method performed with robotic devices used in hair transplantation. These robots precisely extract hair follicles and place them in the areas to be transplanted. This method can be used to obtain more accurate and perfect results.
When choosing between these types, the person’s degree of hair loss, hair type, hair density and personal preferences are taken into account. The hair transplant specialist will assist in the consultation and evaluation process to determine the method that best suits the individual’s needs.
